Feb. 11 (UPI) — Sweden has won gold in mixed doubles curling Tuesday night in Milano, Italy, edging the United States 6-5 in a tightly contested final.
The brother-sister duo of Isabella Wrana and Rasmus Wrana secured Sweden’s first Olympic gold medal in the discipline, rallying late to defeat the United States’ Cory Thiesse and Korey Dropkin.
Neither team led by more than two points throughout the match. Sweden held a 5-3 lead after six ends, but the United States tied the game by scoring two points in the seventh, sitting up a decisive final end.
With the hammer, Sweden’s Isabella Wrana threw a precise final stone, knocking out a U.S. stone from the house to score two points and secure Olympic victory.
“It was a perfect shot for me to have, like a takeout,” Isabella told reporters after the game. “But, of course, you’re nervous. It’s the last shot. If you make it, it’s an Olympic gold.
“But we kept calm. We talked about how we’re going to throw it and I knew that I had a really strong sweeper, so I felt good.”
With the United States winning silver, Cory Thiesse becomes the first American woman to win an Olympic curling medal.
Italy claimed bronze by beating Great Britain earlier Tuesday.
Sweden reached the final by defeating top-seeded Great Britain in the 9-3 semifinal match, while the United States advanced with a 9-8 win over second-place Italy 9-8.
The Americans finished the round robin 6-3, while Sweden went 5-4.
