Saturday, October 10

More than 80 Cockroach Janta Party activists were detained on Saturday after they gathered outside Lal Mahal in Pune to protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the Election Commission, police said.

They had planned to take out a rally from Shaniwar Wada to the Collector’s Office, though permission for this march was denied due to concerns over law and order and public peace, an official said.

The protesters gathered at Shaniwar Wada in the afternoon despite lack of permission, following which more than 80 CJP activists were detained, a Faraskhana police station official said.

Those detained were taken to Lashkar police station, he added.

A protester claimed most were detained well before the agitation started at Lal Mahal, adding that “brute force” was used to rein them in.
