In Assam, the surname Gogoi carries much political weight. Tarun Gogoi, former Chief Minister, led the state for 15 years and remains a respected figure. Now, his son, Gaurav Gogoi of the Congress, is stepping into state politics. He is contesting the Jorhat Assembly seat.

Currently a Member of Parliament and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President, this will be Gaurav Gogoi’s first assembly election. In 2024, he won the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat by over 25,000 votes.

Standing in his way is incumbent four-time MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami, a senior BJP leader and former Speaker of the Assam Assembly. Goswami held the seat in 2016 and 2021 consecutively.

Jorhat, a key constituency in Upper Assam, has seen power alternate between different parties over the decades. In the early years, Congress dominated the seat. From the 1990s onward, regional parties such as the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) gained strength in Upper Assam, with Hitendra Nath Goswami winning the constituency in 1991 for the AGP.

Later, Congress’s Rana Goswami emerged as a strong challenger, winning in 2006 and 2011, before the seat returned to Goswami, who has held it since.

Jorhat includes both urban areas and middle-class neighbourhoods, with voters influenced by the region’s socio-cultural identity. In 2021, the constituency had 1,86,273 registered voters.
