Researchers have shared more details about a hepatitis A outbreak in Italy earlier this year that affected more than 130 people.
Two papers related to the hepatitis A virus (HAV) outbreak were presented at the recent national conference of the Italian Association of Veterinary Food Hygienists (AIVI). They were published in the Italian Journal of Food Safety.
In early 2026, the Campania region experienced a significant increase in cases of hepatitis A, particularly within the area of Naples. Epidemiological investigations identified a potential association between illness and consumption of bivalve mollusks, such as mussels, clams and oysters, consistent with findings from another regional hepatitis A outbreak in 2015.
