The newly created Binnakandi Assembly constituency in Assam is preparing for its first-ever contest in the upcoming elections. Badruddin Ajmal, chief of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and perfume baron, has filed his nomination from this seat.

The 70-year-old lost the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Dhubri. This time, Ajmal will fight against BJP ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader Sahabuddin Mazumdar and Congress ally Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate Rejaul Karim Chowdhury.

The AIUDF is contesting a total of 29 seats in the 2026 Assam elections. The Binnakandi seat was carved out of the erstwhile Jamunamukh constituency following the 2023 delimitation exercise in the northeastern state. Jamunamukh constituency was a strong base for the AIUDF.

Badruddin Ajmal’s brother, Sirajuddin Ajmal, the current Jamunamukh MLA, is unwell, which is why the AIUDF chief’s fight from this symbolic seat.

Jamunamukh marked Badruddin’s political debut in 2006. This election will also serve as a litmus test for the party’s political future as AIUDF struggles to maintain its identity following a crushing defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. AIUDF lost all three seats that it contested in the general elections, with Ajmal himself losing by a margin of over 10 lakh votes from Dhubri.

Assam Assembly Polls: Voting Date

The elections in Assam were held on April 9 in a single phase. The NDA, including AGP and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), is seeking a third consecutive term. This will mark the first elections in Assam after the 2023 delimitation of constituencies. The results will be declared on May 4.

Jamunamukh Seat 2021 Poll Results:

Before the delimitation exercise, Sirajuddin Ajmal effortlessly won the erstwhile Jamunamukh assembly election contest in 2021. He defeated his closest rival, AGP candidate Sadik Ullah Bhuyan, by a margin of over one lakh votes.

In the 2021 assembly elections, the constituency had 2,21,863 registered voters, with 1,87,182 valid votes cast. In 2016, AIUDF candidate Abdur Rahim Ajmal, son of Badruddin Ajmal, won the seat.

In the outgoing assembly, the ruling BJP’s strength is 64, while its allies AGP has nine MLAs, UPPL has seven, and BPF has three members. In the opposition camp, the Congress has 26 MLAs, AIUDF has 15 members, and CPI(M) has one MLA. There is also one Independent MLA.
