Apple CEO John Ternus plans to make company leaner: Report

Apple’s new chief executive officer (CEO), John Ternus, plans to overhaul the company by launching more products faster and cutting layers of management, as he tries to make the tech giant “run faster and leaner.”

Ternus wants Apple to become “more experimental” and to release products throughout the year, rather than stick to its usual spring-and-fall schedule according to a Bloomberg report.

The report mentions that Ternus wants to create a leaner company that focused more on engineering, which meant cost-cutting and restructuring.

One step was “eliminating some middle-management positions to reduce the layers separating engineers from senior executives,” Bloomberg said.

Over the past two weeks, Apple dismissed “a number of engineering program managers” in its hardware engineering division, Bloomberg said. Those staff, who had managed timelines and coordinated work across teams, played a role “central to Apple’s product-development process for decades,” the report added.

The reductions affected several managers, including roughly half a dozen directors, one of the company’s most senior employee levels. Bloomberg said they “were given just weeks to find other positions within Apple.” Those who failed to secure new roles would be laid off later this year.

The report added that the cost-cutting could stretch much further as Ternus had reportedly pushed for a leaner Apple for years. Apple also reportedly scrapped a summer plan to lay off 5,000 AppleCare employees, believing AI-powered agents could handle their duties.

Ternus further targeted revenue as he wanted to grow income from Apple’s services division, working with Eddy Cue and chief financial officer Kevan Parekh. The three executives had discussed launching new services and extracting more revenue from existing products and offerings, the report said.
