Aug. 22 (UPI) — Jameis Winston thew for 150 yards and ran for a score to fuel a New York Giants preseason win over the Miami Dolphins on Saturday in Miami Gardens.
The Giants backup quarterback completed 15 of 21 passes in two quarters of action in the 26-3 triumph at Hard Rock Stadium. First-string quarterback Jaxson Dart was among the many starters rested between the Giants and Dolphins lineups.
Running back Cam Skattebo, wide receiver Malik Nabers and edge rushers Brian Burns, Abdul Carter and Kayvon Thibodeaux were among other notable Giants players rested for their second preseason game.
The Dolphins rested starting quarterback Malik Willis, running back De’Von Achane and four of their five starting offensive lineman. They also sat edge rushers Chop Robinson and Josh Uche, in addition to defensive tackle Zach Sieler and other defensive starters.
Winston engineered an eight-play, 83-yard scoring drive on the Giants’ first possession of the night. Kicker Dominic Zvada chipped in two first-half field goals. The Giants also found the end zone on a 13-yard touchdown run from running back Devin Singletary about five minutes before halftime.
They led 20-3 through the first two quarters. The Dolphins were out-gained 248-87 in the first half. The Giants, who held a 15-3 edge in first downs during that span, continued their ball control domination in the second half. They held a 24:42 to 5:18 advantage in time of possession over the final two quarters.
They held a total yardage advantage of 390-102 in the preseason matchup.
Giants quarterback Brandon Allen completed 13 of 18 passes for 101 yards in the win. Singletary carried eight times for 40 yards, including his 13-yard touchdown dash. Giants kicker Ben Sauls made two second-half field goals in the win.
Dolphins backup quarterback Cam Miller completed 6 of 11 passes for 60 yards. He was sacked twice. Fellow Dolphins quarterback Mark Gronowski completed 2 of 5 passes for one yard. Kicker Riley Patterson secured the Dolphins’ only points with a 53-yard field goal in the second quarter.
“It was great to just get back out there again,” said Miller, who drew more snaps due to an injury sustained last week by second-string quarterback Quinn Ewers.
The Dolphins will host the Atlanta Falcons in their preseason finale at 7 p.m. EDT Friday in Miami Gardens. They will face the Las Vegas Raiders to open their regular season campaign Sept. 13 in Las Vegas.
The Giants will battle rival New York Jets at 7:30 p.m. Friday in East Rutherford, N.J. They will host the Dallas Cowboys in their regular season opener Sept. 13 at MetLife Stadium.
