Tinubu, Governors Move to Reduce Transport Fares Nationwide

President Bola Tinubu and state governors have agreed to take immediate measures to reduce transportation costs across the country, with a focus on the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicles.

The President disclosed this in a statement following his discussion with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, saying the governors had resolved to leverage the lower operating costs associated with CNG and electric vehicles to bring down transport fares in their respective states.

The Federal Government has been investing in the transition to alternative energy for transportation through the Presidential CNG Initiative, under which more than 120,000 vehicles have so far been converted nationwide.

A further 100,000 conversion kits are currently being processed, while additional vehicle conversion centres and CNG refuelling infrastructure are being developed across the country.

The government is also financing more than 100 gas projects through the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund, including 15 CNG mother stations and 86 daughter stations.

Tinubu said four of the projects were commissioned in May in Lagos, Abuja and Owerri. They include a 15-station CNG refuelling network in Lagos and a facility in Abuja with the capacity to serve up to 1,000 cars and tricycles and 50 trucks and buses daily.

The President also directed the rollout of an additional 500 CNG refuelling stations nationwide, bringing the total number of stations ordered under the programme to 1,000.

The initiative is expected to expand access to cheaper and cleaner fuel alternatives and support efforts to reduce transportation costs for commuters nationwide.
