A Clip Of Homeschooled Billie Eilish Claiming That Parents Who Send Their Kids To School Are “Lazy” Has Resurfaced Online, And Unsurprisingly, People Have A LOT Of Thoughts
“I learned how to do math by cooking with my mom and seeing how many halves are gonna make this amount, you know?”
Billie Eilish has come under fire after a clip of her speaking about homeschooling during her 2019 appearance on Pitchfork’s Over/ Under series resurfaced on X.
In case you didn’t know, both Billie and her brother Finneas were entirely homeschooled by their mom, Maggie Baird, with the siblings saying in the past that the curriculum largely focused on self-expression, and gave them time to pursue their personal interests.
The unconventional approach to education also allowed Billie and Finneas to explore the arts — like music and songwriting — and is often credited for Billie’s success at such a young age, with the star writing her first “real” song at age 11 in her mom’s songwriting class.
As I am sure you know, Billie was just 13 years old when she first started to receive recognition for her music in 2015. Finneas, then 17, uploaded her song “Ocean Eyes” to SoundCloud, and before long, both of their public profiles skyrocketed.
Now 24, Billie is one of the most successful artists of this era — but her past comments on homeschooling have left a pretty bad taste in people’s mouths after she made a whole bunch of broad claims, including that parents who don’t homeschool their kids are “lazy as fuck.”
Speaking in the Pitchfork video, Billie nonchalantly says: “I’ve never been to school. I grew up homeschooled, stayed homeschooled, never was not homeschooled. The thing is, I still learned everything, you know? But I learned it in life.”
“I learned how to do math by cooking with my mom and seeing how many halves are gonna make this amount, you know, how are we gonna… If we double this recipe, how many more do we have to put in this batch right here?” she explains. “So, that’s how I learned math, and then I learned how to build shit from my dad.”
“What I’m saying is, like, I learned shit in life, I didn’t have to… ‘cause I feel like when you’re sat down, and somebody’s shoving things in your throat, you’re not going to want to eat them,” Billie goes on. “It’s like everybody forced everybody’s kid to eat broccoli, right? Nobody likes broccoli. But maybe if you weren’t forced to eat broccoli, you’d be like: ‘Shit, this shit is good as hell!’”
“I mean, there’s a lot of ways to do it, I think some people do it the wrong way, which just makes your life horrible and miserable and boring,” Billie concludes. “And that’s mainly because parents are lazy as fuck — that’s why they send their kids to school in the first place: ‘I don’t want to teach you, bitch.’”
Unsurprisingly, Billie’s old quotes have caused quite the stir online, with many calling the star out for her dismissive view of education. One quote-tweet of the video that has over 12k likes simply reads: “her acting like learning how to double recipes is even comparable to learning algebra/geometry/calculus (which is the math children actually learn in high school) is actually hilarious.”

“This video is a PSA against homeschooling lmao,” another viral tweet claims. Somebody else wrote: “outdated education models should change but ‘parents send kids to school because they are lazy’ is ignorant af diminishing the role of educators and acting like anyone can do that. bordering anti science behavior, not taking people’s knowledge and specialties seriously.”
Responding to Billie’s claim that parents sending their kids to school are “lazy,” one more wrote: “our parents had to go to work, billie.”
