Paramount showed off a brief look at Sonic the Hedgehog 4 at Cinemacon last week, and while the short trailer has not been shared publicly, we have been told that it showed Jim Carrey returning as Robotnik. However, this presentation may have also contained a clue about the future of the Sonic live-action movies beyond the fourth movie coming out next year. At least, if a long-standing theory is shown to hold water a fourth time.

Tika Sumpter plays Maddie Wachowski, a vet and Sonic’s adoptive human mother in the movies. While she was primarily a supporting character in the beginning, her role has grown a bit over the course of the first three movies, to the point where fans have warmed up to her and the rest of the new human cast. However, she also has, whether intentionally or not, ended up becoming a major point of speculation for future Sonic movies because at some point, whether it be in the movie itself or in promotional material, she seems to wear a shirt that corresponds to the Sonic character that eventually shows up in the post-credits scene of the movie.

This isn’t just a one-off, either. Sumpter has worn shirts that lined up with all three post-credits teasers in the first three films. In the first movie, she sported a yellow tanktop, and then Sonic’s fox friend Tails showed up at the end. During the second film’s climax, she wears a red shirt and black jacket, and Shadow the Hedgehog was teased after the credits. Lastly, in 2024’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Maddie had on a pink sweater during the family’s camping trip, and then Amy Rose swooped in to rescue Sonic in the closing scene. Now that a pattern has been established, Sonic fans are on the lookout for Sumpter’s fit in every shot, piece of promo material, or, in the case of Cinemacon, in a video message featuring the actor and James Marsden, who plays her character’s husband, Tom.

Cinemacon has notoriously tight security and doesn’t allow filming, so most of the information we get from the Las Vegas show comes from people who were there, and so far, no one has spilled the beans on what color Sumpter’s shirt was in the message. We’ve reached out to some folks who were at the event to see if we can find out what color she was wearing and will update this story if we hear back.

Now that fans have latched onto this theory, I wouldn’t be surprised if Paramount has Sumpter start dressing in misleading colors to throw fans off. Or they might play into it since it gets people talking. Personally I’m crossing my fingers for a white and purple top so Rouge the Bat finally shows up when Sonic the Hedgehog 4 comes to theaters on March 19, 2027.
