Pros

  • Looks great with a bunch of different outfits
  • Comes in a wide range of lens colors
  • Perfect for round, oval, and square faces

Cons

  • Heavier than others on the list

As a style editor for the past four years, I’ve tested over 25 different pairs of sunnies, but the Rayban Wayfarer is still the best in its class. The signature silhouette—a slightly, angular trapezoidal shape with thicker acetate frames—adds structure without looking too sharp, so it looks great on just about round, oval, and even square faces and plays well with just about every fit.

First introduced in the ‘50s as a casual alternative to metal frames, it was later worn by Tom Cruise, Michael Jackson, and George Michael, cementing its style icon status by the ‘80s. In the past few years Rayban has updated it, with a few stylish design tweaks—including a slightly smaller frame and more rounded lens shapes. We found it’s even easier to wear day-to-day to the office, lunch, or an early happy hour.

A wide range of frame and lens colors are available in the Original Wayfarer, but you can’t ever go wrong with the old-school black. We love this style because it looks great with every kind of vibe: a tailored suit, a tee and jeans, or just swim trunks on vacation. I found the acetate frame to be extra robust and heavy-duty at withstanding impact, courtesy of the seven-barrel hinges on each side. While this design does make the whole thing a bit heavier than most sunnies on this list, I never feel like it’s a burden on my face. I’ve found them comfortable whether I’m wearing them for a couple hours or from sunup to sundown.

Pros

  • Softens sharper more angular faces
  • Toned-down tortoise looks great with solid staples
  • Affordable price compared to other lists

Cons

  • May not be perfect for guys with lower or higher bridges

The Downing from Warby Parker is a safe bet because it will never go out of style. The slightly rounded shape traces back to mid-century optical styles that leaned more circular before chunkier shapes took over the game. That softer, more classic silhouette flatters square and angular face shapes especially well, and gives the Downing its staying power today. While heritage brands like Ray-Ban and Persol offer similar rounded styles, Warby Parker delivers a comparable timeless look and build at a much more accessible price.

The rounded lenses help soften sharper, more angular faces, but they’re not overly circular, which is why they still work on round and oval faces too. It’s one of those rare shapes that’s versatile across the board. I have a round face, and they look great with whatever vibe I’m going with. The keyhole bridge sits naturally on the nose (no adjustable pads), though it may not be a perfect fit for guys with lower or higher nose bridges. The acetate frame feels smooth yet durable, and the scratch-resistant lenses hold well if you drop them or toss them in your bag.

I also found that the temples are lightweight, so they don’t pinch behind your ears, making them easy to wear from the time I get to the office and the time I leave. The color—called English Oak—is like a toned-down tortoise that looks best with solid, everyday staples.

Pros

  • Goes with any fit
  • Adds structure to rounder faces
  • Comes in multiple color lenses
  • Sits comfortably on the nose

Cons

  • Not as durable as heavier acetate

If you want a pair of sunglasses that you can throw on with anything, every day, Napoli is the one. I’ve worn them with everything—think T-shirt and jeans, a polo and chinos, or even a hoodie and shorts. The square shape adds structure to rounder faces without looking too boxy on guys with sharper features. The keyhole bridge sits so comfortably on the nose, I don’t even feel it. I love the lens colors, which veers away from the super dark black lenses.

The gradient brown-to-yellow lenses are easy on the eyes in bright sun, giving a relaxed vibe. This also makes the sunnies more wearable—you can rock them in the bright sun or just walk around the city without feeling like you’re hiding behind your shades. The temples are slim but stay in place no matter how I move my head. While the acetate frame is lightweight and comfortable, it doesn’t offer the same durability as heavier acetate, so handle with care if you’re rough on glasses or toss them in your bag.

Pros

  • Looks great paired with casual or dressier looks
  • Reduce glare on water
  • Comfortable for hours at a time
  • Temple tips make it easy to slip on and off
  • Durable and scratch-resistant

Cons

  • Not great on wider faces

Randolph began churning out military-spec aviators for the U.S. Air Force in the late 1970s, and its metal frames are still very stylish today. Unlike mass-produced sunglasses, each pair is handcrafted in the U.S., going through 200 steps over six weeks, which gives them a high-quality feel built to last a lifetime. I’ve had mine for three years now and wore them for the first time during a weekend getaway to Nantucket. I sported them on boat rides, walking along the pier, and during casual dinners. They performed flawlessly, reducing glare on the water and staying comfortable for hours. They’re perfect for everyday casual outfits like shorts, T-shirts, or polo shirts. They also pair nicely with slightly dressier looks, like linen button-downs or lightweight jackets.

The Skytech glass lenses are made from durable optical glass and deliver exceptional clarity, contrast, and anti-reflective performance, with both polarized and non-polarized options available. The durable matte chrome frames with snug screws hold up well, while the clear bayonet-style temple tips slide gently along the side of your head instead curving around your ears. They make it easy to slip on and off, and help them stay in place. This aviator shape works for most face types but is especially flattering on oval, square, and heart-shaped faces, balancing wider foreheads and softening softer jawlines. It’s not the best option for wider faces as it can make them appear even bigger.

Pros

  • Great option for running, golfing, and cycling
  • Unique wraparound design gives you extra coverage
  • Lightweight without being flimsy
  • Best for oval or medium-to-long faces
  • Backed by a generous 2-year warranty

Cons

  • Made for performance use only, not style

Oakley’s Radar EV S Path has those taller lenses perfect for athletes and anyone spends a lot of time running, golfing, or cycling. This extended range of view really shows off the legendary Prizm lens, which makes colors pop and boosts contrast so you can see everything clearly. This wraparound design gives you extra coverage at the top, protecting your eyes from sunlight, wind, and debris. The no-slip nosepad and extended arms keep the glasses locked in place, even when you’re sweating.

The lightweight, flexible frame plus adjustable noisepiece makes them comfortable for long sessions. Best for oval and medium-to-long faces, the wraparound style hugs the sides for a snug, secure fit. Small or very round faces can still wear them, but wider faces might find them a little tight. Heads-up: These are just made for performance and not style, so don’t try to sport them with a casual T-shirt or button-up at dressy brunch.

Pros

  • Great for rounder or softer face shapes
  • Affordable 9under $50), but don’t feel cheap
  • Bridge and nose pads are molded into the frame for comfort

Uniqlo delivers an affordable rectangular pair of sunglasses that don’t feel cheap. It looks as sharp and polished as pairs that cost way more. The frames are made from flexible plastic that feels lightweight in hand but aren’t flimsy. Case in point: I dropped it more than once and even accidentally sat on it—fully expecting a snap. Somehow, the temples held strong and didn’t split in half. The thicker temples help here, too. The bridge and nose pads are molded into the frame, providing comfortable support. This pair of sunglasses lack adjustable nose pads, so the fit may not work for those who have a low or high nose bridge.

The rectangular shape is especially great for rounder or softer face shapes, adding structure and making your features look sharper. If you’ve got a fuller face, this is one of the easiest ways to balance things out. Yes, these shades block sunlight effectively with enough coverage to keep glare out of your eyes without feeling oversized. I wore them on bright midday walks and didn’t find myself having to squint. If you’re looking for multiple color frames, Uniqlo doesn’t offer that with these shades. You can only get them in a black, but that doesn’t limit your styling options.

Pros

  • Gold rims and green lenses provide luxe, retro vibe
  • Comes in a bunch of lens options
  • Looks great with vacation fits
  • Adjustable nose pads let you fine-tune the fit

Cons

  • Must be delicate with this pair

Rayban’s round sunglasses are a step up from your everyday pair, thanks to the gold metal rims and classic green lenses, which give off a more luxe, retro aesthetic. The thin metal build looks great and keeps the pair lightweight and sleek, but it’s more delicate than thicker frames.

The metal bridge with adjustable nose pads lets you fine-tune the fit, while the slim temples keep them comfortable. It’s perfect for vacation fits—easily pairing with swim trunks or an open camp shirt and linen shorts for a resort lunch. I’ve worn mine poolside in Costa Rica while laying in the sun, but they’ll also dress something like a tee and jeans if you don’t want to look too basic. It sits a bit closer to the face (petite fit), which makes it feel more styled than oversized. The round shape softens sharper features, but still works across the board for most guys. Bonus: they come in a bunch of lens options—blue, brown, and gradients—so you can switch up the vibe.

Pros

  • Timeless style
  • Unique shape

Cons

  • Not the best for wider faces

Persol’s aviator shades offer a wider field of view and a serious level of coverage. These bold, square sunglasses are a great option for guys with round faces, but anyone can sport them.

In our testing, we found that the polarized, light blue lenses not only looked dope, but also offered scratch and shatter resistance to make sure these sunnies last awhile. They look great worn for a lunch date with friends, but especially give main character energy when you’re tanning on the beach or poolside.

Another stylish, but also functional standout is the 100% acetate frame, which we’ve found to be lightweight and sturdy. After using it for a full day at the beach, we hardly noticed that we were actually wearing it.

Pros

  • Best for round and oval faces
  • Timeless, versatile design will always be in style
  • Over 20 color options for the lens tints
  • Looks with neutrals, subtle prints and patterns
  • Comfortable keyhole bridge

Cons

  • May not add definition for guys with square or angular faces

Tortoise sunglasses are timeless, versatile and universally flattering. This classy pair from Moscot looks good with lots of neutral fits—think white tees, navy shirts or olive chinos. You can also mix it with small or muted patterns like thin stripes, tiny checks or small prints. These shades are made from real Italian acetate and come in a square-ish round silhouette that’ll always be in style. It’s offered in four sizes for a tailored fit. The keyhole nose bridge keeps them comfortable for more than six hours, and the rims feel robust without feeling overly heavy.

The rounded lenses work best on round and oval faces, thanks to its slight square edge that balances softer features. Caveat: guys with very square or angular faces may find that the softer edges of this frame don’t add much definition, so the effect is more relaxed than structured. Also, I found these sunnies to be heavier than other picks that I’ve tested, which may feel bulky on smaller faces. They come in over 20 color options, but for an everyday classic look, the chestnut fade is a safe bet.

Pros

  • A secure fit that’s lightweight and comfortable
  • Polarized to reduce glare and eye strain
  • Affordable to grab more than 1 pair

Cons

  • Plastic frame isn’t the most durable

A simple, lightweight, Wayfarer design with a durable construction is all any guy’s sunglasses game needs. Based our testing, the Weekenders’ has the best fit for most face types. To all the lost or broken sunglasses during outdoor adventures, this one’s for you. Designed with a sporty twist on the classic Wayfarer frame, these sunglasses boast a proper secure fit that won’t slip off unexpectedly while giving you a lightweight, comfortable feel that will not wear off.

Crafted for durability as well, these sunglasses can take a beating and bounce back effortlessly; the temples further safeguard the hinges, offering added protection in case of any mishaps. Our testers also approved of their polarized lenses that have helped us combat glares, and reduce eye strain and reflections while giving our daily views enhanced clarity and color. And don’t forget: these shades boast 100% UVA/UVB resistance, ensuring your eyes stay shielded from harmful rays.

At this price point, we recommend getting the Weekenders as an extra backup pair, though using them as your main sunnies is also a no-brainer.

Pros

  • Adjustable rubber temple tips help keep the frame in place
  • Lightweight and comfy to wear all day
  • Adds balance for rounded, oval, and heart-shaped faces

Cons

  • This style may not work for every face

Rectangular sunglasses tend to look best on guys with rounded, oval or heart-shaped faces. Enter Oliver Peoples’ version, which is a collaboration with tennis champ, Roger Federer. Their sharper edges complement guys with softer facial features.

We found that these sunnies offer high-optical quality as well as style for days spent on and off the tennis court. Thanks to the adjustable rubber nosepads and temple tips, they rested gently on our face (even when we were playing) and felt more comfortable to wear all day long than any other rectangular frames we tested.

How to Choose the Right Sunglasses for Your Face Shape

As a rule of thumb, go for frames that oppose your features (e.g. square faces are softened by a round frame).

Round Face

Rectangular or square frames with straight lines and edgy corners will help add definition to your round face and soft curves, or even make your face look longer.

Square Face

If you’ve got a defined jawline and/or a wide forehead, round or oval frames will soften the angles of your face instead of accentuating them.

Oval Face

While we love how the balanced proportions of an oval face complement the teardrop-shaped lenses and double-bar frame of aviator sunglasses, the truth is: oval face shapes will look good with most if not all shapes of the frame. But, generally, you’ll want to look for sunnies that are as wide as the broadest part of your face.

Heart-shaped Face

Sporting a narrower jawline and broader forehead? Cat-eye or aviator-style sunglasses will draw attention to the upper part of the face, balancing the wider forehead and narrower chin.

Diamond-shaped Face

High cheekbones and a narrow forehead and chin look great with rimless or oval frames of sunglasses because they emphasize your eyes and soften your facial angles.

What Are the Most Durable Materials for Men’s Sunglasses?

Acetate is a popular material for crafting frames since it combines both durability and style, allowing for a wide range of color and pattern options, and is thus frequently used in premium sunglasses. TR-90, a thermoplastic material, is known for its durability, flexibility, and resistance to impact, and thus can often be found in outdoorsy sunglasses. Nylon is lightweight and flexible while offering excellent durability, even being able to resist extreme temperatures. Other materials like stainless steel and titanium are simply no-brainers due to their outstanding durability and ability to withstand wear and tear over time.

Can Prescription Lenses Be Added to Sunglasses?

Yes and in fact it’s a common practice for people who require vision correction. Many eyewear retailers and opticians offer the option to customize sunglasses with prescription lenses. It’ll involve eye examination, prescription, lens customization, and fitting and adjustment.
