Only in sports can someone do something better than every person in America and be considered a failure. Only in this twisted sphere could you spend countless hours across several years as the focus of sold-out stadiums and international broadcasts and leave little to remember.
But Taylor Fritz, 28, still has time to avoid becoming just another great American hope who failed to end the nation’s unthinkable 23-year men’s Grand Slam drought, two years after coming within one win of the U.S. Open crown.
“I mean, it’s super important for me,” Fritz said about winning a Grand Slam title. “I’d be, I think, pretty disappointed in the end of [my career] if I wasn’t able to achieve that.”
He may never have a better opportunity to avoid the fates of the forgotten.
