SEASON ONE WAS just the beginning. That’s a pretty literal thing to say about any television show, but on one as ambitious and unafraid to take chances and change its game as Paradise, it means a whole world more. A show that initially presented itself as a political thriller and murder mystery and eventually revealed its true identity as a post-apocalyptic epic, Paradise could go in any which direction at any which point. And that’s part of the show’s charm.
The first season introduced us to a number of interesting characters, including Sterling K. Brown’s lead secret service agent Xavier Collins, Julianne Nicholson’s villainous billionaire Samantha Redmond a.k.a. “Sinatra,” and James Marsden’s late President Cal Bradford, who has just enough charisma to power posthumous flashbacks after his mysterious death provides the series with an opening hook. Twists and turns abound throughout the season.
But that presidential murder mystery is wrapped up by the end of season 1, leading the new season 2 to get bigger and even wilder. Redmond told Xavier near the end of season 1 that there is, indeed life outside of their mountain dome, and that his wife in Atlanta could easily still be alive. That’s revealed after President Bradford was shown in an epic flashback episode to have fired off a JFK-era EMP that took out the world’s nuclear supply at the cost of the world’s electronics. So we learn the truth: The Surface is livable, but rough, but there’s no electricity. The world, quite literally, has gone dark. How’s that for post-apocalyptic?
Season 2 picks up with Xavier making his way to explore the surface, and who who could be more curious? Paradise presents mystery after mystery, and, yes, they get a bit absurd and ridiculous at some points. But when they’re anchored by actors as good as Sterling K. Brown and Julianne Nicholson (and newcomer Shailene Woodley joins the fun in season 2), it’s always going to be hard to look away.
Here’s everything you need to know to make sure you don’t miss a single season 2 episode of Paradise.
