WASHINGTON — The finality of it all is so cruel, especially when your dreams reach higher than the Empire State Building. St. John’s wanted so much more. Expected so much more. Believed they were destined for a marathon joy ride on The Road to Indianapolis. A Team of Destiny, chasing their One Shining Moment.
Tears flowed everywhere, inside the locker room, on the podium in the interview room. After Zuby Ejiofor, his college career over, broke down answering a question, Pitino excused him quietly to leave the interview room and head back to the distraught locker room. Dillon Mitchell wiped away tears on the podium as well.
Senior Bryce Hopkins had to stop in the middle of an answer for 10 seconds in the locker room to cover his eyes with his hand.
“The run that we made to the Sweet 16 is something I’ll always remember,” he said. “I don’t know what the future has planned for me, but I’ll always remember this team.”
