Plus Irish agencies report on revised EU Listeria rules now in force

Published:

Researchers have suggested an optional change to food labels to help reduce the risk of Listeria infections.

Scientists from DTU National Food Institute in Denmark said the idea is to give consumers the opportunity to choose ready-to-eat (RTE) foods, such as smoked salmon and spiced pork roll, without risking infection from Listeria.

Listeria accounts for almost a third of all deaths associated with foodborne outbreaks in the EU. Infection poses a higher risk to older people, those with underlying health conditions and other vulnerable groups, as well as pregnant women.
