New entry said to be in dev since 2023

Capcom hopes to keep the Dead Rising franchise alive with a new sequel set in Hollywood, according to a report from the increasingly reliable MP1st.

The site claims the game has been in development since 2023 under the codename ‘Rec’, and will plot the return of protagonist Frank West in a story set after the events of the original game.

This is pertinent because the publisher recently remade the original for the PS5, giving fans a good onboarding point.

The game is said to take place on a movie lot in Hollywood, which sounds like a lot of fun because you could pack a lot of different “themes” and “sets” into a small area.

West will, allegedly, be up against a deranged movie director who’s seeking to shoot the perfect film. Among the survivors on set will be various actors and extras.

It sounds like the sequel will retain the series’ roguelike-ish gameplay, which makes sense considering the prevalence of the genre these days.

Back when Dead Rising originally released on the Xbox 360 in 2006, people were less familiar with the format, and so its time limits and emphasis on repetition and runs didn’t really appeal to everyone. But in this post-Hades and Returnal world, people generally have a greater appreciation for this type of gameplay.

MP1st doesn’t speculate on a release date, but does suggest it may still be some way away. That makes sense because Capcom has the likes of Pragmata and Resident Evil Requiem coming up in the immediate future, with various other remakes and remasters rumoured beyond that.

We’re potentially looking at a PS6 game here, then, although we’re fairly confident whatever Capcom releases will be cross-gen and also available on the PS5.
