Festive season at its peak, Renault India has launched the new Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 at a starting price of ₹16.99 lakh, introducing its strong-hybrid technology in the Indian market. The SUV, which combines a 1.8-litre petrol engine with two electric motors, claims an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 29 kmpl as the automaker looks to tap demand for fuel-efficient SUVs.
The new Duster Strong Hybrid is available in three variants — Evolution, Techno and Emotion — priced at ₹16.99 lakh, ₹18.99 lakh and ₹19.49 lakh, respectively, ex-showroom. Bookings are open across authorised Renault dealerships and on the company’s website.
The launch comes as automakers expand their electrified offerings, with strong hybrids emerging as an alternative for buyers seeking the benefits of electric driving without the need for external charging infrastructure.
The Duster’s hybrid powertrain combines a 1.8-litre petrol engine, two electric motors and a 1.4 kWh lithium-ion battery, delivering a maximum combined output of 160 PS and peak motor torque of 208 Nm. Renault claims that up to 80% of city driving can be completed in pure electric mode under suitable conditions.
The battery recharges automatically through energy recovery and regenerative braking. The system switches between electric, hybrid and petrol-powered driving depending on road and driving conditions.
Renault is positioning the strong hybrid as an alternative to diesel SUVs, particularly in the ₹17 lakh-₹20 lakh price bracket. Francisco Hidalgo, Vice President – Sales and Marketing at Renault Group India, said nearly half of diesel vehicles in the Duster’s segment are sold in this price band, rising to more than 90% for diesel automatics.
The company claims fuel savings of up to 29% compared with diesel, while offering a quieter and smoother driving experience.
Renault Group India CEO Stéphane Deblaise said the launch was part of the company’s futuREady India roadmap, which aims to bring Renault’s global technologies to Indian customers while developing vehicles, powertrains and features suited to local needs.
With the new Duster Strong Hybrid, Renault is looking to strengthen its position in India’s competitive SUV market by combining electrification with the convenience of conventional petrol-powered ownership.
