Philippine Airlines (PAL) has received an invitation to join the oneworld® Alliance, a move that will make the Philippines’ flag carrier the alliance’s 16th member airline and only its second full member based in Southeast Asia.
The announcement was made during the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, marking a significant milestone for both the airline and the alliance’s expansion strategy in Asia.
Once integrated into the alliance, Philippine Airlines customers will gain access to nearly 1,000 destinations across more than 170 countries and territories through the oneworld network. Mabuhay Miles members will also be able to earn and redeem miles across all oneworld carriers while enjoying reciprocal elite benefits, priority services, and access to more than 700 airport lounges worldwide.
The addition of Philippine Airlines further strengthens oneworld’s presence in Southeast Asia, where the alliance already counts Malaysia Airlines and SriLankan Airlines among its members. In the broader Asia-Pacific region, the alliance’s network includes major carriers such as Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Qantas, and Fiji Airways, giving oneworld one of the region’s most comprehensive premium airline networks.

For the Chinese mainland, Philippine Airlines has maintained a longstanding presence through routes connecting Manila with major Chinese cities. Its network has included gateways such as Beijing, Shanghai, Xiamen, Guangzhou, and other key destinations, serving both leisure and business travel as well as the growing flow of passengers connecting between China, Southeast Asia, North America, and Australia. The airline’s growing China network has helped position Manila as an increasingly important transfer hub within the region.

The alliance’s decision also comes at a time when aviation demand across Asia continues to recover and expand. Philippine Airlines currently operates an extensive domestic network throughout the Philippines alongside international services spanning Asia, North America, Australia, and the Middle East. The carrier recently announced plans to further strengthen its long-haul fleet as it prepares for future growth.
As the integration process moves forward, travelers can expect expanded network access, smoother transfers, and greater loyalty program benefits across the alliance’s worldwide network.
