TAZ SKYLAR IS always on the go. As the live-action version of Sanji, one of the characters in the mega-popular One Piece series, the actor spent much of Season 2 in various parts of South Africa filming the Straw Hats’ journey to the Grand Line. With multiple fight scenes this season, Skylar spent months living closely with professional stuntmen—and says he picked up several exercises that mirror the actions on the Netflix show.
“I’m training to be as bulletproof and injury-proof as I can and I’m trying to keep everything in my training simple enough that I can do it any place I am,” Skylar told MH.
Since the actor spent hours on set, he developed workouts he can easily perform on the spot. “So if we’re in the middle of a desert or if we’re on the back of a studio lot, I don’t have things in my routine that I can’t sustain outside of a space.”
Skylar also had the added pressure to recreate Sanji’s iconic Black Leg style. The One Piece chef is well-known to avoid using his hands in battle, focusing instead on flexible and explosive leg movements. To train for this unique combat method, Skylar incorporated a mix of cardio, kettlebell workouts, and martial arts. It’s definitely paid off as seen with the high-speed kicks that helped defeat several Baroque Works agents this season. And yes, he still performs most of his stunts—if he’s able to do them just as well as his double.
