July 29 (UPI) — Glen Hansard, lead singer for the Irish alt-rock band The Frames, has died in a Dublin motorcycle crash. He was 56.
The BBC said police are looking for witnesses to the singe-vehicle accident, which happened shortly before 4:30 a.m. local time.
“With broken hearts we announce the passing of Glen Hansard in the early hours of this morning,” his official Instagram page said Wednesday.
“We are still dealing with the shock of it all, so we kindly ask that the privacy of Glen’s family, colleagues and friends is respected at this difficult time.”
Hansard won an Oscar in 2008 for co-writing “Falling Softly” with Marketa Inglova, his co-star in the music-themed movie, Once, which was later adapted into a popular stage musical.
The Irish Times said Hansard is survived by a wife and young son.
Other film acting credits include The Commitments and Flag Day.
