Date A Live adapts Koushi Tachibana‘s sci-fi romance light novel, which they began penning under the Fujimi Fantasia Bunko label in March 2011, featuring illustrations by Tsunako. Fujimi Shobo published the 22nd and final volume in March 2020. Date A Live has a cumulative 6 million copies of its volumes in circulation.
AIC Plus+ produced the first anime season in Spring 2013. The second season by Production IMS premiered in 10 episodes the following Spring. The Date A Live: Mayuri Judgment sequel movie opened in Japan in August 2015. Date A Live III, the third season by J.C.Staff, aired in Winter 2019.
Geek Toys produced the fourth and fifth season in Spring 2022 and Spring 2024. The animation studio also produced the two-part Date A Bullet spin-off movie, which screened in theaters in August and November 2020.
Funimation licensed the anime series in North America and released the first two seasons on Blu-ray and DVD in June 2014 and March 2016, respectively, followed by the third season in April 2020. Crunchyroll released the fourth and fifth season on home video in May 2023 and May 2025.
