The gain added roughly $65 billion to his fortune in a single day. More than 98% of his wealth comes from his stakes in the two companies.
Musk’s wealth has swung widely in recent months. It rose to about $1.3 trillion after SpaceX’s initial public offering earlier this year. Shares then fell as investors worried the company had grown too fast, too quickly.
By June 24, just 12 days after the listing, his wealth had dropped to about $957 billion. That took him below the trillion dollar mark for a time.
What’s Driving The Stock Gains
SpaceX shares jumped more than 7% on Monday. The move followed an update from Musk about a possible new deal.
Space Exploration Technologies Corp., SPCX
Reports say SpaceX is in talks with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company to build a new facility. The facility could make chips for SpaceX.
Musk posted about the talks on X. He described them as “just discussions, but something may come of it.”
Tesla shares rose 2.2% the same day. Analysts pointed to strong third quarter delivery numbers as a reason for the gain.
An analyst at Deutsche Bank kept a Buy rating on Tesla stock. The analyst sees about 11% upside from current levels.
The analyst said Tesla’s sales in Europe improved in September. China sales also beat expectations, helped by cash discounts on cars already in stock.
Deutsche Bank raised its third quarter revenue estimate for Tesla. The new estimate is $27.7 billion, up from $27.2 billion.
How Musk’s Wealth Compares To World Economies
Forbes puts Musk’s current net worth at $1 trillion. That would rank him 23rd if compared with national economies, using 2025 GDP figures from the International Monetary Fund.
That places him just behind Poland, at $1.04 trillion. He sits ahead of Taiwan, at $920 billion.
Switzerland’s economy is also close in size, at $1.04 trillion. A bit more wealth would put Musk near the level of the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia.
Mark Zuckerberg ranks second on the Forbes list of wealthiest people. His net worth stands at $254 billion.
Looking ahead, Tesla is set to report its third quarter 2026 results on October 21. Investors will watch for updates on electric vehicle sales and self-driving technology plans.
SpaceX investors are watching for the next Starship test flight, numbered 15. That flight is expected in late October or early November. A second flight, numbered 16, is expected before year end.
SpaceX’s third quarter earnings report is tentatively set for November 5. Investors will watch whether the company stays on track for its $100 billion annual recurring revenue target.
SpaceX also has stock lockup dates coming on October 9 and October 26. A larger lockup expiry is set for December 8. These dates could bring more shares into the market.
Wall Street holds a Strong Buy rating on SpaceX stock overall. Tesla carries a Moderate Buy rating based on recent analyst surveys.
