Monsoon weather update: UP, Bihar likely to receive very heavy rainfall; yellow alert in Punjab, Haryana

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and other northeastern states, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall.

A yellow alert has been issued predicting heavy rain across Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, West Bengal and Odisha. The weather agency has also issued a yellow alert for strong surface winds over parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka.

Heavy rainfall over Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh

The IMD predicted widespread rainfall over Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on July 11-12, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand from July 11-16, and East Uttar Pradesh from July 11-13. Isolated to scattered rainfall is also forecast over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh during the period.

It also forecasts isolated heavy rainfall over Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi and parts of Uttar Pradesh. Isolated very heavy rainfall is also likely over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and East Uttar Pradesh on July 11.

Rainfall likely in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh

Isolated to scattered rainfall is likely over West Madhya Pradesh (July 11-16), East Madhya Pradesh (July 11-14), Vidarbha (July 11-13) and Chhattisgarh (July 11-12). Rainfall is expected to become fairly widespread to widespread over East Madhya Pradesh (July 15-16), Vidarbha (July 14-16) and Chhattisgarh (July 13-16).

The weather office has also predicted thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of up to 60 kmph over parts of East and West Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha, while Chhattisgarh is likely to experience thunderstorms and lightning. Heavy rainfall is expected over East Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh between July 13 and 16.

Heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh and Assam

Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura (July 11-16). Isolated thunderstorms and lightning are likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura (July 11-14).

Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh (July 11-16), Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura (July 12-16). Isolated very heavy rainfall is likely over Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on July 11.

Rainfall predicted for Odisha and Bihar

Isolated to scattered rainfall is likely over the Andaman & Nicobar Islands (July 16), Jharkhand (July 11), Bihar (July 12-16) and Odisha (July 11-12). Rainfall is expected to become fairly widespread to widespread over Andaman & Nicobar Islands (July 11-15), Gangetic West Bengal, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim (July 11-16), Jharkhand (July 12-16), Bihar (July 11) and Odisha (July 13-16).

Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-60 kmph are likely over Andaman & Nicobar Islands (July 11-16). Gusty winds of 30-50 kmph are also expected over Bihar, Odisha, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim (July 11-16) and Gangetic West Bengal (July 11-14). Isolated thunderstorms and lightning are likely over Jharkhand (July 11-14).

Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Odisha and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim (July 13-16), Gangetic West Bengal (July 11-14), Jharkhand (July 13-14) and Bihar (July 12-14). Isolated very heavy rainfall is likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim (July 11-12) and Bihar (July 11).
