Three Michigan men are facing serious criminal charges after authorities uncovered an alleged kidnapping and extortion scheme tied to a disputed gambling arrangement in Las Vegas

Investigators Detail Strip Hotel Abduction Linked to Sports Betting Debt

Investigators said the suspects allegedly held a man against his will in a hotel room in a major resort on the Las Vegas Strip while trying to get a large amount of money they believed was owed to them. The victim, a New York man, was reportedly involved in sports betting activities that turned into an argument, as reported by The Las Vegas Review-Journal

The suspects, who include a dentist, a DJ, and a physical therapist, allegedly lured the victim to a meeting to settle monetary affairs. Things allegedly became violent once the pair was inside the hotel room. Authorities said the suspects tied up, beat, and threatened the man over what they said were unpaid gambling debts

Investigators say the victim had visible injuries, including bruising on his face. During the ordeal, he was allegedly made to contact a family member under duress. Threats suggesting harm would occur if a six-figure payment was not delivered promptly are detailed in law enforcement reports. The police believe the perpetrators also tried to intimidate the victim with details of his family members

Court Sets High Bail in Las Vegas Case Tied to Sports Wagers and Abduction Allegations

The case appears to arise out of a series of sports bets that the victim had agreed to place on behalf of one of the accused. However, officials say the bets were never placed. The victim apparently fabricated fake betting confirmations to demonstrate that bets had been placed and were paying off handsomely. As the supposed winnings grew and demands for payment were made, tensions mounted.

The police were called after the victim’s family raised the alarm over suspicious communication. Phone tracking and coordination with hotel staff allowed officers to find the room where the victim was located. One of the suspects was on the scene at the time, and the others were arrested later.

The three now face multiple felony charges, including kidnapping, extortion, and conspiracy. Defense lawyers have said in early court proceedings that the situation is more complex than it seems and that the alleged deception involved in the betting activity is an important factor

A judge set bail at $100,000 for each defendant and imposed strict conditions, including electronic monitoring and a ban on contacting the victim. The investigation continues, and prosecutors are still reviewing evidence and building the case for trial.
