As Hollywood continues to mourn James Van Der Beek‘s death, Marlon Wayans recently recalled the actor’s cameo in Scary Movie (2000).

The actor and franchise co-creator, who reprises his role as Shorty Meeks in Scary Movie 6, premiering June 5, said that Van Der Beek “was cool as hell for even doing it,” making a quick appearance in one early scene as his eponymous Dawson’s Creek character.

“He was huge on Dawson’s Creek,” Wayans told Entertainment Weekly. “He was like, ‘Oh, I’m game,’ and I was like, ‘bet.’”

In the scene, which parodied Scream (1996), Cindy Campbell (Anna Faris) begins making out with her boyfriend Bobby (Jon Abrahams) in her bedroom when the WB show’s theme song, Paula Cole’s ‘I Don’t Want to Wait’, starts playing, summoning a confused Dawson to her window.

Wayans recalled, “It was quick, but the audience loved it. ‘Oh! Wrong, wrong, wrong set!’ And he just leaves. It was just the coolest moment.”

Van Der Beek played the titular teen in Dawson’s Creek for its six-season run on The WB from 1998 to 2003, launching his onscreen career.

Last month, James’ wife Kimberly announced that he died at age 48 after revealing his colorectal cancer diagnosis.

:Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning,” the family wrote on Instagram. “He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
