Mariska Hargitay Teases a “Big Announcement” & Life Beyond ‘Law & Order: SVU’

Mariska Hargitay‘s latest case is taking place in her real life.

Indeed, the Law & Order: SVU star is diving deep into her own personal history in her new HBO documentary My Mom Jayne in which she details her journey to better understand her late mom Jayne Mansfield, who died in a car crash in 1967 when Mariska was just 3 years old. And for her, that’s meant exploring the deep secrets her family kept.

“I pulled out this picture,” Mariska, 61, whose dad is former bodybuilder Mickey Hargitay, said a new trailer for the documentary released June 3. “Couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It was like the floor fell out from underneath me. Why didn’t he tell me?”

The family secret addressed in the trailer is seemingly the identity of Mariska’s biological father, Las Vegas entertainer Nelson Sardelli, which was revealed when the documentary premiered at Cannes Film Festival on May 17.

The rest of the trailer features clips from interviews with Mariska’s siblings who had more years with her mother, who, “at home, was just Jayne,” according to Mariska’s sister. (The late Playboy playmate was also mom to Jayne Marie Mansfield, 74, with Paul Mansfield; Mickey Hargitay, Jr., 66, and Zoltan Hargitay, 64, with Mickey; and Tony Cimber, 59, with Matt Cimber.)

And Mariska also let her mother speak for herself, using clips from her mom on talk shows to demonstrate how her mother was more than the sex symbol she was often reduced to.

The Emmy winner’s voiceover begins the trailer with, “I’ve spent years distancing myself from my mother,” as she goes through old items of her mother’s. Following a clip of Jayne sharing, “I use my pin-up type publicity to get my foot in the door,” Mariska alludes to Jayne’s sex symbol legacy as she explains, “Her career made me want to do it differently. But I want to understand her now.”

The trailer ends with the overarching theme of the documentary, where Mariska states, “Reclaiming my family story—that is what this is about for me, because she’s a part of me. I want to know her as Jayne, my mom Jayne.”

Mariska originally announced the documentary on April 8, where she wrote in a press release, “This movie is a labor of love and longing. It’s a search for the mother I never knew, an integration of a part of myself I’d never owned, and a reclaiming of my mother’s story and my own truth.”
