Chants of “Let’s Go Mets!” rang out when Mets superstar Juan Soto came to the plate in the third inning. Loyalty is a hallmark of the faithful of the star-crossed team from Queens, and they clearly aren’t giving up on a season seemingly on the verge of quick disintegration.

There was a wonderful energy for Game 2 of this Subway Series at Citi Field, and that’s terrific considering the standing, the trend and the health of the home team. Most may be lost, but Mets backers refuse to abandon hope. Good for them.

The fans at the Flushing park soon were rewarded, as Soto walked to load the bases. What happened next thrilled the throng. Yankees starter Carlos Rodón followed with a wild pitch and compounded that mistake with a wild throw after fielding the rebound off the backstop for two gift Mets runs.

The second errant toss brought home Bo Bichette in the 6-3 Mets victory that evened this Subway Series. It was the ugliest two-run play of the young season but a thing of beauty to Mets fans starved for some positivity.
