Kate Middleton and Prince William took a break from their summer vacation Saturday to attend the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, but this trip was special, even by royal standards. Also in attendance were Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, which makes this the first official public appearance for all five in Scotland, a landmark moment for the Waleses.

While the family spends part of every summer at Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire, those visits had previously been strictly private. But this year, Prince William and Kate Middleton—who officially hold the titles of the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay in Scotland—made their first visit to the Commonwealth Games since 2022 a family affair, taking their children to watch the netball semifinals on the penultimate day of the tournament.

According to The Times, the day’s schedule also includes a meeting with athletes from the Welsh delegation, time with event volunteers, and a visit to the velodrome to watch the track cycling events. The schedule also includes an event with the charity SportsAid, which supports promising young athletes. The Princess of Wales has been a patron of the organization since 2013.

Unlike other recent sporting events, such as the men’s final at Wimbledon, where only Prince George and Princess Charlotte accompanied their parents, the presence of 8-year-old Prince Louis completed the family picture in Glasgow. Seated in the stands between his two siblings, the little boy once again stole the show with a wide range of expressions during the match: he rested his chin on his hands, held his breath in surprise, and couldn’t help but yawn a few times as he followed the action.

The visit continues the British royal family’s involvement in this edition of the Games, which were relocated to Scotland after the Australian host city of Victoria withdrew and adapted to a smaller format featuring ten sports. The official opening ceremony, held on July 23, was presided over by King Charles III and Queen Camilla, who made their entrance by stepping out of the iconic TARDIS from the TV series Doctor Who. In recent days, other members of the British royal family, such as Princess Anne and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, have also attended.
