The monsoon remains active across several parts of India on Tuesday, September 1, with heavy to very heavy rain likely in Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and parts of Uttar Pradesh. Mumbai and Kolkata are also likely to see rain, while Delhi could get a spell of light rain and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening.
Rainy day for Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata
Delhi is likely to see partly cloudy skies, with light rain at many places accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning during the afternoon and evening. Temperatures are expected to remain between 25°C and 27°C at night and 34°C and 36°C during the day.
The city could see more rain in the days ahead, with the IMD forecasting widespread rain across Delhi and neighbouring Haryana and Punjab from September 3-5.
Mumbai too is likely to remain wet as the Konkan and Goa region is forecast to receive widespread rainfall through September 6. The IMD expects rain to continue across the region on Tuesday, although the bulletin does not provide a separate city-specific forecast for Mumbai.
Kolkata and parts of Gangetic West Bengal could see widespread rain on Tuesday. The IMD has also forecast heavy rain in Gangetic West Bengal on August 31 and September 1, along with gusty winds in parts of the region.
Rest of India
Bhubaneswar and other parts of Odisha are among the areas facing the biggest rain threat on Tuesday. The IMD has forecast isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Odisha, with isolated extremely heavy rain also possible in the state as the weather system moves inland.
Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana could see scattered rain, with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds also possible. Winds could reach 30-40 kmph, with gusts up to 50 kmph.
Bengaluru is likely to see scattered rainfall on Tuesday, as South Interior Karnataka remains under a spell of generally subdued but persistent rain.
Chennai and parts of Tamil Nadu could see scattered rain, with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds possible through September 2. Winds may reach 40-50 kmph, with stronger gusts in some areas.
Heavy rain belt shifts across central and eastern India
The biggest concern on Tuesday is across Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar and East Uttar Pradesh. The IMD has warned of heavy to very heavy rain in these areas, while East Madhya Pradesh is likely to remain wet through September 5. Chhattisgarh faces a particularly high risk, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall forecast for September 1.
The heavy rain could cause waterlogging, flooding in low-lying areas and disruption to road and rail traffic in vulnerable locations. The IMD has also flagged a low-to-moderate risk of flash floods in parts of Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal over the next 24 hours.
