Elon Musk’s father has blamed last week’s nuclear meltdown—between the world’s richest man and the president of the United States, ages 53 and 78, respectively—on his son’s need for a nap.

Speaking to Russian media, according the New York Post, Errol Musk said of his son and Donald Trump: “They’re very tired and stressed. And so you can expect something like this. It’s not unusual.” (He did not say if this sort of thing happened a lot when Musk was a kid, or if Musk similarly acted out when he was hungry and/or needed to be burped.) Noting that Trump would “prevail” due to being “the president,” the elder Musk opined that his son had “made a mistake” by getting into it with the leader of the free world. “But he’s tired. He’s stressed.”

As a reminder, last week’s market-moving brawl was seemingly sparked by Musk’s describing Trump’s spending bill as a “disgusting abomination,” and it also included:

  • Musk writing, “Without me, Trump would have lost the election,” and calling Trump an ingrate
  • Trump threatening to cancel Musk’s government contracts and calling him crazy
  • People close to Trump saying he was considering selling his Tesla, likely out of spite
  • Musk appearing to back a call for Trump’s impeachment
  • Musk posting that the “Epstein files” had not been publicly released because Trump was in them, a claim he has since deleted. (He did not delete his raised-eyebrow-emoji response to a post reading, “The relationship between Trump and Epstein is well established. Trump flew on Epstein’s plane at least 7 times. Though it’s not clear he ever went to the island.”)

Asked if he had any plans to reconcile with his former benefactor, Trump told reporters on Friday, “No, I don’t have any plans,” saying that he was “not really interested” in doing so, and then adding, probably most hurtfully, “I’m not thinking about Elon. You know, I just wish him well.” It’s not clear what Musk’s thoughts are on the matter; he appeared to endorse Trump’s attack on California over the weekend, and on Sunday night wrote: “It’s outrageous how much character assassination has been directed at me, especially by me!” Could that potentially have to do with his losing a fuck ton of money last week? It’s surely possible, though perhaps he just misses his old pal.
