The Department for Education (DfE) has appointed three contractors to deliver nearly £130m worth of school construction works.

Kier has been awarded the largest of the three schemes: a £69.3m contract to deliver the main works at Upton-by-Chester High School in Cheshire.

The scheme is scheduled to finish on 14 July 2028.

Morgan Sindall has secured a £16.3m contract to carry out the main works at Burnside Secondary Pupil Referral Unit in Tyne and Wear.

The contractor is due to complete work by 3 March 2028.

Bowmer & Kirkland Ltd has landed a £43.8m contract to build new facilities at Gosford Hill School in Oxfordshire.

The job is due to complete on 23 February 2029.

All three contracts began on 20 October and were procured under the DfE’s £7bn 2021 Construction Framework.

This is being replaced by a new £15.4bn framework to run from December 2025 to December 2031.

Construction News revealed last month that Bowmer & Kirkland was the DfE’s highest-paid construction company for the fourth year in a row.

Data obtained under the Freedom of Information Act showed that the Derbyshire-headquartered firm was paid £320.8m in the 2024/25 financial year.

Kier was in third place with £263.7m, while Morgan Sindall was sixth on £132.6m.
