Charlotte FC has added one of European football’s most electrifying dribblers to its roster. Allan Saint-Maximin, the 29-year-old French winger, signed a three-year contract with the Major League Soccer club as a free agent.

Saint-Maximin arrives as a Designated Player, the MLS roster mechanism that allows clubs to sign players whose compensation exceeds the league’s salary cap.

From Ligue 1 to MLS

Saint-Maximin’s contract with RC Lens was set to expire on June 30, 2026, making the timing of this deal fairly straightforward. Negotiations reportedly began in late May 2026, with French sports publication L’Equipe confirming the player’s agreement shortly after talks picked up steam.

Born on March 12, 1997, Saint-Maximin has built a reputation across European football as one of those players who can change a game in a single moment. His dribbling ability and raw pace made him a fan favorite everywhere he’s played, perhaps most notably during his time at Newcastle United in the English Premier League.

Charlotte FC will be his 11th professional club.

The signing is widely viewed as a strategic replacement for Wilfried Zaha, the former Crystal Palace star who had been one of Charlotte’s marquee attacking players.

What this means for Charlotte FC’s trajectory

Charlotte FC, which entered MLS as an expansion team in 2022, has been steadily building its roster with recognizable names.

The three-year contract length is worth noting. It’s long enough to build around but short enough that the club isn’t overcommitting if things go sideways.
