Bihpuria is among the oldest constituencies in Assam’s Legislative Assembly. Situated in Lakhimpur district, it has primarily seen contests involving the Congress, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and, more recently, the BJP.
In recent years, the BJP has consolidated its position, turning Bihpuria into a stronghold.
In the 2011 Assembly elections, Congress leader Bhupen Kumar Borah secured a victory by defeating AGP’s Kesharam Bora with a margin of 12,156 votes. At the time, the BJP had a minimal presence in the constituency, finishing in fourth place.
The political landscape shifted significantly in 2016, when the BJP surged ahead, with Debananda Hazarika winning the seat by defeating Bhupen Borah with a margin of 26,187 votes. The party maintained its dominance in the 2021 elections as well, with Amiya Kumar Bhuyan emerging victorious. Bhuyan defeated Bhupen Borah once again, this time by 10,178 votes.
The back-to-back wins in 2016 and 2021 underline the BJP’s growing influence in the region, marking a clear shift from the earlier dominance of Congress and AGP in Bihpuria.
The 2026 election in Bihpuria has become one of the most high-profile contests in Assam following the major political shift of Bhupen Kumar Borah. Just before the polls, the former Assam Congress chief switched sides to Himanta Biswa Sarma-led BJP.
