  • Busy households who need a true one-hour wash-and-dry cycle

Skip if:

  • If you have shallow cabinets, it may protrude slightly, due to FlushFit design

The LG FlushFit Top Control dishwasher’s crowning glory is its QuadWash Pro technology: It uses four multi-directional spray arms, which are also equipped with small aerators that create residue-targeting microbubbles to give your dishes a more thorough clean. But beyond that, it offers a lot more useful features: One is the TrueSteam technology, which generates fresh steam both at the start of the wash cycle (helping soften and pull hardened grime from dishes) and during the drying stage, which helps reduce water spots. Another useful feature is the true one-hour cycle option, leaving dishes towel-dry in 60 minutes. Lastly, it can hold up to 16 place settings (including a third, height-adjustable cutlery rack) and features two interior LED lights.

Between these useful, intuitive features and its sub-$1,000 price tag on sale, we think this LG dishwasher is one of the most efficient models you can purchase. In fact, one of our testers was able to put LG’s QuadWash and drying technology to the test with the previous, now-discontinued version of this dishwasher. She elaborates on her experience: “It dries so well, plastic included, even without a rinse aid. Sometimes there would be some droplets left on food storage containers if I didn’t put a rinse aid in, but this one had considerably better performance than many other dishwashers I’ve tried.”

Bosch 800 Series Dishwasher

Dimensions: 33.9 x 23.5 x 23.7 inches | Noise level: 42 dB | Number of place settings: 16 | Racks: | Tub material: Stainless steel | Drying method: Crystal dry (minerals that absorb moisture to create heat), condensation | Energy Star certified: Yes | Warranty: 1 year (parts, labor), 2- to 5-year tiers (parts-only for electronics, racks), lifetime (rust-through for door and inner liner)

Best for:

  • Those who want a very quiet operation and completely dry plastics
  • Flexible loading, thanks to adjustable middle rack and flat third rack
  • Tech-savvy users who want push notifications, utility tracking and other smart features

Skip if:

  • You rely mostly on a dishwasher’s physical control panel over an app
  • The premium $1,500 price tag is above your budget
  • You want a shorter standard wash cycle (it’s about two hours)

If you’re looking to incorporate a smart dishwasher into your kitchen, it’s important not to overlook how well they perform their core function. “The best smart appliances should make the appliance better at its primary job first, then add [smart features] that simplify daily life,” says Hannah Pregont, creative director at AJ Madison. In light of these criteria, her top smart dishwasher pick is the Bosch 800. “Its technology supports what matters most, like quiet operation, strong cleaning and excellent drying.”

She’s not exaggerating—with just 42 decibels of operational noise, it rivals the LG, our top pick overall, and its smart features are key to its powerful cleaning and drying. For starters, you can use the app to assign different cleaning intensities to each of the dishwasher’s four “quadrants,” and the independently motorized spray arm is able to change speeds, reverse direction, slow down, stay longer at one spot or stop accordingly. This is particularly useful if you sometimes don’t have time to pre-rinse dishes.

This quadrant flexibility makes loading the dishwasher a lot more forgiving: Put a crusty baking dish in one quadrant and fragile cocktail glasses or plasticware in the next one, without worrying about destroying the latter group. Meanwhile, smart sensors monitor soil levels during the cleaning cycle and adjust water levels automatically.
Besides that, another unique feature is the so-called “CrystalDry” technology, which uses natural minerals that absorb moisture and generate enough heat to dry dishes, as opposed to a traditional heating element. (We recommend still using a rinse aid, however.) Abt appliance expert Shirley Hood vouches for its drying performance: “The CrystalDry method is phenomenal and offers outstanding performance in drying dishes, including plastics.” Users agree, reporting that this drying technique is less likely to leave water spots on their plastics and glassware. One downside of the machine, though, is that some smart features, like Delay Start, are only available through the Bosch app.

KitchenAid Top Control Dishwasher

Dimensions: 23.9 x 33.6 x 26.8 inches | Noise level: 44 dB | Number of place settings: 16 | Racks: | Tub material: Stainless steel | Drying method: Heat dry, fanless ventilation, auto-open | Energy Star certified: Yes | Warranty: 1 year (extended options available)

Best for:

  • Those who want a quiet operation and completely dry plastics
  • Skipping filter maintenance due to self-cleaning feature
  • Households that use a lot of mugs, small bowls and bottles

Skip if:

  • Your large household needs to run multiple cycles in a row (cycles are about 3 to 4 hours)

While this KitchenAid unit isn’t the only dishwasher on our list with a third rack, it impressed us with its capacity. Due to its angled shape, it can accommodate 6-inch mugs, cups, bowls and other larger items. Plus, it operates at only 44 decibels, something one tester and mom appreciates in her home. “We live in a one-bedroom apartment with a baby, so we’re particularly concerned about noise. We can run this overnight and during naps without waking him,” she says. Adding to its appeal, she notes that “the exterior looks just as sleek and polished in real life.” This extra rack also has tiny rotating wash jets and a drying bar that help get those items extra clean.

Beyond the spacious third rack and quiet operation, the KitchenAid’s ProDry heating system—which combines a heating element, a built-in fan to circulate hot air, and a side vent through which the fan pulls moisture out—is particularly effective, especially paired with the automatic door-open feature at the end of a cleaning cycle. This translates to towel-dry dishes, a boon for households that tend to use a lot of plastic containers and mugs.

Also of note is the ProWash cycle, which senses soil levels while the dishwasher runs and adjusts the water temperature and run time accordingly. Plus, the KitchenAid features a self-cleaning filtration system that regularly grinds down and flushes out food particles, eliminating the need for a chore that many people often forget to do.

Lowe’s

Bosch 500 Series Dishwasher

Dimensions: 23.8 x 23.6 x 33.8 inches | Noise level: 44 dB | Number of place settings: 16 | Racks: | Tub material: Stainless steel | Drying method: Condensation dry, auto-open | Energy Star certified: Yes | Warranty: 1 year (parts, labor), 2- to 5-year tiers (parts-only for electronics, racks), lifetime (rust-through for door and inner liner)

Best for:

  • Tech-savvy users who want push notifications, cycle customization and other smart features
  • Families who tend to run cycles at night (thanks to quiet operation and auto-open feature)
  • Households who use a lot of lids and small utensils

Skip if:

  • You rely mostly on a dishwasher’s physical control panel over an app

Ringing up at around $1,200, the Bosch 500 Series’ price tag is squarely in the middle of all the options on our list, but in our opinion, it offers exceptional value for its performance. First, it runs at just 44 decibels, a level so quiet that both of our testers report that they often can’t tell it’s on without checking the red indicator light projected onto the floor—which also happens to be a useful tool that keeps you from opening the door mid-cycle.

The Bosch 500 comfortably handles daily loads for families of three to four with room to spare for oversize pots and pans, mainly thanks to its flexible third rack and built-in sensors that automatically adjust cleaning. Users who prefer to use apps should appreciate this machine’s smart connectivity via the Home Connect app, too: This lets you start cycles remotely, customize presets and get alerts when it’s time to clean the filter or refill the rinse aid.

But the most popular feature with both of our testers is the AutoAir Dry system, which automatically pops the door open at the end of a cycle to let steam escape naturally. One tester says that this setup dries dishes better than her previous model’s traditional heating element while not melting plastics on the bottom rack. The other notes, “We run ours at night, so when I come down in the morning, the door is open and the dishes are dry and ready to be unloaded.”

GE Built-In Tall Tub Dishwasher

Dimensions: 33.4 x 23.8 x 24 inches | Noise level: 52 dB | Number of place settings: 14 | Racks: | Tub material: Plastic | Drying method: Heated dry | Energy Star certified: Yes | Warranty: 1 year (parts, labor)

Best for:

  • Large households that want a more affordable dishwasher
  • Its simple, user-friendly top controls
  • Those who want the option to boost drying for extra-large loads

Skip if:

  • You want a third rack
  • You prefer a stainless-steel tub

Not all good-quality dishwashers cost near (or surpass) $800. Take this GE Tall Tub model, which is spacious (it fits up to 14 place settings), easy to use and versatile. The AutoSense wash cycle is particularly energy-efficient, using internal sensors to gauge soil levels and automatically adjust settings accordingly. Plus, top-integrated controls give the exterior a sleek, uninterrupted look.

This model punched well above its price tag in the real world in terms of capacity and cleaning power. Our tester notes that she can load the machine completely full before running it and very rarely needs to rewash an item. While the lower rack sits relatively low to the ground, that layout makes it easier to pack in bulkier cookware like stockpots and baking sheets. There’s also an optional third rack sold separately for about $64 if you want more room for dishes.

Its operation is relatively quiet for such a budget-conscious appliance. Our tester rated its noise level about an 8 out of 10, noting that while you can hear the water draining, the cycle itself is quiet enough to run without interrupting conversations nearby. As for performance, glass items routinely come out bone-dry, though our tester notes that plasticware can retain a bit of moisture when the tub is packed tight. Turning on the Dry Boost option helps address dampness when it comes to extra-heavy loads, she adds. Finally, maintenance is simple: A quick swipe with stainless-steel spray keeps the exterior pristine, and clearing the internal drain once a month keeps everything running smoothly.

Bosch 100 Series Dishwasher

Dimensions: 33.9 x 23.6 x 23.8 inches | Noise level: 48 dB | Number of place settings: 12 | Racks: | Tub material: Stainless steel | Drying method: Residual heat, condensation | Energy Star certified: No | Warranty: 1 year (parts, labor)

Best for:

  • Fans of Bosch’s dishwasher technology, but not its typical $900-plus price tag
  • Those who need a relatively quiet machine (only slightly louder than our top pick)
  • Tech-savvy users who want push notifications, remote starting and other smart features

Skip if:

  • You use a lot of plasticware or bulky bakeware

If you want many of the premium features that come with a Miele or Bosch dishwasher but hope to spend less than $1,000, the Bosch 100 Series delivers. Its exterior looks clean and polished with a recessed handle and a fingerprint- and smudge-resistant finish. The two roomy racks inside make loading and stacking dinnerware intuitive, and targeted spray arms help dishes come out cleaner without any pre-rinsing.

In real-world testing, this model proved to be a workhorse for our tester’s household of four (two adults, a child and an infant). It comfortably fit a full day’s worth of place settings into a single cycle, and she says that the cutlery rack frees up substantial space on the lower level. The built-in sanitize option is a standout feature: “We have been heavily using this feature with my son’s baby bottles, so it’s nice to not have a sanitizing device on the counter.” She also found the fold-down holders on the upper rack to keep wine glass stems secure to be a nice touch.

The Bosch 100’s operation is almost as quiet as its more expensive counterparts; our tester says the machine runs virtually unheard, only making noticeable noise when cleaning large stockpots. Like other Bosch models, this lacks a traditional heating element and instead relies on PureDry condensation drying, making it gentler on bottom-rack plastics. Maintenance is also straightforward: The stainless-steel exterior rarely needs wiping down, and though removing the internal food catch has a slight learning curve, our tester reports that it’s simple to rinse once you get the hang of it.

Miele G 7216 SCU Front Control Dishwasher

Dimensions: 23.5 x 36.2 x 22.4 inches | Noise level: 42 dB | Number of place settings: 16 | Racks: | Tub material: Stainless steel | Drying method: Condensation, auto-open | Energy Star certified: Yes | Warranty: 2 years (parts, labor)

Best for:

  • Those who want a very quiet operation
  • Households that use a lot of glassware and fine china
  • Families who tend to run cycles at night (thanks to low noise and auto-open feature)

Skip if:

  • You use a lot of plastic containers

Interior designer and home chef Chantelle Hartman Malarkey highly vouches for high-tech Miele appliances like this dishwasher; they tend to run quietly, operate smoothly and have short cycle times. “It is truly a game changer in being quick and efficient,” she says of this model. “It’s super sleek and an overall beautiful appliance. The outside is even fingerprint resistant.” Indeed, this model is Wi-Fi connected and cleans powerfully, thanks to cycle options like ExtraClean (which increases the temperature and adds a pre-rinse stage) and Pots & Pans (for that trickier cookware residue) that allow you to skip the pre-rinse cycle when it comes to plates with stuck-on food.

The dishwasher also features a smartly designed internal layout: It’s fully customizable, offering a height-adjustable section for smaller items and a width-adjustable section for wine glasses and other stemware. Its topmost cutlery tray is also adjustable in three ways for added flexibility. An innovative dosing system called AutoDos senses and dispenses the optimal amount of detergent for whatever you are washing. Plus, the appliance is equipped with energy-saving features like automatic load sensing and a unique water feed technology called “Economy” that reduces water consumption when rinsing.

Fisher & Paykel Series 7 Contemporary Double DishDrawer

Dimensions: 32.3 x 23.6 x 22.6 inches | Noise level: 45 dB | Number of place settings: 14 | Racks: | Tub material: Polymer plastic | Drying method: Fan-assisted drying, hot rinse | Energy Star certified: Yes | Warranty: 2 years (parts, labor)

Best for:

  • Small households
  • Those who entertain frequently (flexible loading)
  • Those with mobility issues (top drawer is waist high)

Skip if:

  • You have a large or busy household
  • You frequently use oversize bakeware

It can sometimes be frustrating when the dishes you need are sitting dirty in the dishwasher. On the other hand, filling your sink with dirty dishes while waiting for your dishwasher to stop running is also inconvenient. Fisher & Paykel’s Series 7 Double DishDrawer eliminates that hassle with its two drawers that can be run separately. “The ability to run one drawer at a time is particularly handy for getting school lunchboxes and dinnerware clean without having to wait on more dishes,” says one tester and mom.

You can choose from six different wash options (including Quick Wash and Heavy Duty). The drawers easily slide in and out and offer a range of racking options, from folding tines to collapsible wine glass supports to adjustable cup racks. Plus, the fact that each drawer can be used independently is especially convenient for saving energy when you only have half a load. It also operates quietly at around 45 decibels, which is equivalent to a quiet library or a refrigerator hum.

Samsung Bespoke Smart Third Rack Washing System

Dimensions: 25 x 33.9 x 23.9 inches | Noise level: 38 dB | Number of place settings: 16 | Racks: | Tub material: Stainless steel | Drying method: Residual heat, condensation, fan-assisted, auto-open | Energy Star certified: Yes | Warranty: 1 year (parts, labor), 5 years (parts only for specific components)

Best for:

  • Extremely quiet operation
  • A good variety of wash options, including half load and delayed start
  • Flexible third rack is helpful for smaller utensils
  • Door opens once wash cycle is over to help dry dishes

Skip if:

  • Normal wash cycle is relatively long at two hours

Operating at just 38 decibels, this Samsung dishwasher is the quietest on our list (and one of the quietest on the market), but its performance is still top-notch. And it looks modern: “It instantly helped upgrade our somewhat outdated kitchen,” says our tester. Besides its looks, this Samsung dishwasher has a unique sliding spray bar that ensures total coverage of dirty dishes, AquaBlast jets that clean from corner to corner and a Zone Booster option that provides an extra water stream at the bottom left of the appliance for harder-to-tackle cookware.

The dishwasher is big enough to fit up to 16 place settings, and the third rack provides extra space—an aspect our tester found crucial to her family. “The third rack was a must for stashing our kids’ pacifiers, sippy cup lids and baby-size spoons and forks,” she says. It also has integrated Wi-Fi that allows you to control and monitor the machine remotely. But one of our favorite features is that the door automatically opens when the cycle is done, so you don’t have to worry about lingering moisture or a buildup of unwanted smells. Our tester points to the two-hour runtime of the regular wash cycle as a downside, but she appreciates the option to run a 60-minute express cycle instead.

What To Consider When Shopping For A Dishwasher

When looking to invest in the best dishwasher for your home, it’s important to consider your specific lifestyle and needs. Below, see a breakdown of key factors to keep in mind.

Capacity

Start with your lifestyle and how many people you live with. Do you live in a household of one or two, or are there several members in your family? Do you order takeout and use minimal dishes, or are you constantly prepping meals for multiple people? The number of place settings a dishwasher can accommodate is a good measurement to help you gauge if that particular model meets your needs. That information can also help you avoid overloading, one of the most common reasons dishes don’t come out clean, according to Hood. “It is very important not to overload your dishwasher and to load dishes properly so that the water and detergent can reach each dish,” she advises. Standard dishwashers typically hold between 12 and 16 place settings, as do most on our list.

Dimensions

In addition to finding a model that fits in its designated space, experts advise that you leave at least 27 inches in front of your dishwasher for its door to have enough clearance to open comfortably. (However, it’s best to check the exact door-open measurement before purchasing). If you need to place the appliance against a corner, it’s best to leave a gap of at least 2 inches between the dishwasher’s door (ajar) and the wall.

Those who are limited on space can opt for smaller-size models like the Comfee Countertop Dishwasher, which is ideal for apartment-dwellers whose kitchens don’t have the appliance or a dedicated dishwasher hookup.

Noise Level

The level of noise a dishwasher emits while operating is typically listed in decibels (dB). After deciding what level of noise you’re comfortable with having in the background, do the research on what the equivalent is in dB. “Extremely quiet ranges from 38 to 42, very quiet is 43 to 47, and quiet is 48 to 52,” Hood explains. Our favorite quiet dishwasher, the Samsung Bespoke Smart, operates at 38 dB.
