More than 8 lakh Assam government employees and pensioners are set to receive higher monthly payouts after the state Cabinet approved a 2-percentage-point increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR), taking the rate from 58% to 60% with immediate effect.
The revision will benefit serving employees, pensioners, family pensioners, extraordinary pensioners and compassionate family pensioners, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said after a Cabinet meeting on Friday (June 5).
For employees and retirees, the hike translates into a modest increase in take-home income and pension receipts, helping cushion the impact of rising living costs. Dearness allowance is a cost-of-living adjustment paid to government employees and pensioners and is revised periodically based on inflation trends.

The Assam government’s move comes amid a broader trend of revisions in government compensation structures. Last month, the Union Cabinet approved a 2-percentage-point increase in DA and DR for central government employees and pensioners, also aimed at offsetting inflationary pressures.
While the exact monetary benefit will vary depending on an employee’s basic pay or pension, the increase is expected to provide additional financial support to households facing higher expenses.
Apart from the DA revision, the Cabinet approved a series of administrative and development measures, including an increase in MLA Local Area Development (MLALAD) funds and the creation of a second State Capital Region around Dibrugarh.
The DA hike is likely to be the most immediately felt decision for government employees and retirees, as it directly affects monthly earnings and pension income.
