Air India’s revenue fell 8.6% in FY26 while its loss more than doubled, with Tata Sons saying the airline’s transformation will be a five-to-10-year effort as it undertakes fleet renewal, systems upgrades and operational changes.
Air India’s loss more than doubled in FY26 even as revenue declined, underscoring the scale of the turnaround underway at the Tata Group-owned airline.
According to the Tata Sons Annual Report, Air India’s loss widened to ₹22,238 crore in FY26 from ₹10,859 crore a year earlier.
Revenue declined 8.6% to ₹71,870 crore from ₹78,636 crore in FY25.
Tata Sons described FY26 as Air India’s most challenging year and said the airline’s transformation would take five to ten years.
The group attributed the long timeline to global supply chain constraints, the scale of fleet and systems modernisation, cultural transformation and talent development required to build a world-class airline.
Tata Sons said its long-term objective is to build an airline that helps position India as a global aviation hub, rather than merely a market served by international carriers.
Air India has been undertaking one of the aviation industry’s biggest turnaround programmes since returning to the Tata Group in 2022. The airline has been integrating operations with Vistara, refurbishing aircraft, modernising technology systems and expanding its fleet, while also contending with aircraft delivery delays and supply chain disruptions affecting the global aviation industry.
