80th Independence Day 2026 Live Updates: India is celebrating its 80th Independence Day today, August 15, 2026, marking 79 years since the country gained independence from British rule. While 79 complete years have passed since August 15, 1947, this year is being observed as the 80th Independence Day because the first celebration in 1947 is included in the count.

This year’s Independence Day celebrations are being held under the theme “Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat@2047”, highlighting the role of India’s youth in the country’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. The theme focuses on technological advancement, the transition to green energy, self-reliance in defence and youth-led innovation.

The celebrations also mark 150 years of “Vande Mataram”, the national song that inspired Indians during the freedom struggle. “Vande Mataram” will be sung for the first time at this year’s Independence Day celebrations as part of the commemoration.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leading the 80th Independence Day celebrations from the ramparts of the Red Fort in Delhi today. Authorities have also strengthened security arrangements ahead of the celebrations.
