Suddenly he panicked and said, “Call 911 now!” I asked why. He pointed at the screen and there was Mr. Elliott, our neighbor from a few houses down, setting the box on our step and then swaying, gripping our railing, walking away like the ground kept moving. We ran down the street in our slippers and found him slumped on his couch, awake but confused, his words coming out wrong.
The paramedics came fast, caught early, and we stayed holding his hand until the ambulance came. He was home within the week, and that’s when the other truth came out: he’d heard about the rough patch we’ve been in since my hours got cut, and the vegetables were his way of repaying years of mowed lawns and check-ins, done after dark so we’d never feel we owed him anything. The doctors said the early call made all the difference. His garden made it to fall, and the Friday boxes never stopped. They just moved to daylight, one week at his table, one week at ours.
