Not everyone thinks it’s a 10/10

When new indie adventure Mixtape released on Xbox Game Pass late last week to fantastic reviews, including many 10/10 scores from the likes of IGN and DualShockers, it inevitibly attracted a lot of attention.

However, it’s fair to say that not everyone agrees with those scores — it currently has a 6.3 user score on Metacritic, for example, and the Xbox Store reviews have it at 3.9/5 (Steam is “Very Positive” though).

Here’s what the “Most Helpful Review” currently says on Steam at the time of writing:

“For a “game” hailed as “10/10” by a certain video game reviewer, I anticipated it would be one of the standout narrative-driven games of the year. Instead, I was met with a generic, disappointing, and humorless experience that attempted to capture the essence of those rebellious 90s moments but ultimately failed due to the cringe-worthy interactions sprinkled throughout.

Music choices and visuals were nice, but that’s about it. Also, given its price and the minimal amount of gameplay, you would be better off watching it on YouTube, as it feels more like an interactive movie than an actual “game”.”

And here’s another example of some criticism that was commented on by former Xbox exec Mike Ybarra:

Seemingly in response to all of this discourse, the official Xbox account on Twitter/X took to the platform last night to remind everyone that “just because you’re not personally into a game, doesn’t mean it’s a bad game”.

You can imagine the kind of drama that was caused by this — the tweet has racked up 2 million views and counting!

Of course, this doesn’t specifically call out Mixtape by name, but it’s almost certainly directed towards it. Everyone in the comments is referencing Mixtape either way, and not in a very positive fashion.

It’s weird that Mixtape has ended up causing this kind of reaction, and to be honest you could argue that it’ll work in the game’s favour (controversy creates cash and all that!).
