Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kyrgyzstan on Sunday, August 30, to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit and hold bilateral meetings with leaders on the sidelines of the gathering.
Modi was received at the airport by Kasymaliev Adylbek Aleshovich, chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers. A traditional Kyrgyz dance performance was also held to welcome the prime minister.
Modi is visiting Kyrgyzstan at the invitation of President Sadyr Zhaparov for the 26th SCO Summit, scheduled for August 31 and September 1.
The 10-member SCO is marking 25 years of the organisation, which was founded in 2001 by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. India and Pakistan joined as full members in 2017, followed by Iran in 2023 and Belarus in 2024.
Modi is expected to meet several SCO leaders, including Zhaparov and Russian President Vladimir Putin, on the sidelines of the summit, PTI reported.
In his departure statement on Saturday, Modi said he looked forward to advancing India’s vision for the region, anchored in “security, connectivity and opportunity”, while working with SCO members towards a region free from “terrorism, separatism and extremism”.
He will also attend the opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games.
Modi said the visit would strengthen India’s strategic partnerships in Central Asia, deepen India’s civilisational connect with the region and advance a shared pursuit of peace, stability and prosperity.
Xi Jinping also arrives in Kyrgyzstan
Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Kyrgyzstan on Sunday to participate in the SCO summit, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
“I look forward to attending the SCO Bishkek Summit, working with all parties to revisit the 25-year development experience of the SCO, jointly discuss cooperation plans, create the future of the organisation,” Xi said after his arrival.
Xi said he looked forward to working with other members to “promote the continuous new development of the organisation”.
The Chinese president is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with several SCO leaders during the visit.
Xi’s trip comes ahead of a busy September, with the Chinese president widely expected to attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12-13 and later travel to the US for a summit meeting with President Donald Trump.
India-China boundary talks
Ahead of the BRICS summit, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held the 25th meeting of the Special Representatives mechanism on the India-China boundary question in Beijing on Tuesday.
The two sides reached an eight-point consensus and agreed to advance discussions on an “Early and Substantial Harvest” of boundary delimitation and border management.
The Special Representatives mechanism is a key forum for addressing the India-China boundary dispute, which spans 3,488 km, as well as recurring tensions over bilateral issues.
