San Antonio’s mayor is urging the cancellation of a planned Kanye West concert at the Alamodome on July 4th, saying the city should not host the antisemitic artist in a city-funded venue.
Over the weekend, San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones called for the cancellation of an upcoming Kanye West concert at the Alamodome on the Fourth of July. The mayor said the city should not host “someone with a record of hate speech and antisemitic comments in a city-funded facility,” and especially not on the country’s 250th birthday.
“I support cancelling the Ye concert,” Jones wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “Military City USA should not host someone with a record of hate speech and antisemitic comments in a city-funded facility like our Alamodome—not ever, and certainly not on July 4th, our Nation’s 250th birthday. Standing up to antisemitism is exactly what it takes to achieve a more perfect Union.”
Mayor Jones’ post comes after several European countries refused to host West, who now goes by Ye, in the wake of his rampant hate speech and self-proclaimed Nazism over the last few years. Most recently, lawmakers in Florida urged organizers to cancel a planned Kanye concert in Tampa at Raymond James Stadium—but so far, organizers have declined to cancel the event.
Earlier this year, Ye was denied entry into the UK ahead of a planned headlining appearance at Wireless Festival. Planned shows in Poland, Italy, Switzerland, and Brazil were also cancelled, while West postponed his appearance in France after lawmakers were reportedly looking to cancel. However, Ye still played a recent show in Turkey and also played shows in Los Angeles earlier this year.
The disgraced artist took out a full-page ad in The Wall Street Journal back in January to issue a public apology for his antisemitic statements and hateful remarks. West claimed to “have lost touch with reality,” and blamed his bipolar disorder for causing a “four-month-long manic episode.” It’s worth noting that Kanye West’s Adidas deal was canceled for antisemitic remarks made by the rapper in October 2022—four years ago.
