Sainsbury’s issues urgent recall of accessory over risk of severe ‘allergic reactions’
Sainsbury’s has issued an urgent recall of Beeline Belly bars after discovering elevated nickel levels that exceed legal limits in parts of the product.
The retailer warns that wearing the affected belly bars could trigger allergic reactions in customers.
According to Sainsbury’s, the following batch of belly bars has been recalled:
SKU: 4050261861540
Product Description: White Flower design Belly Bar
Batch code: 810-591
Beeline has apologised for any inconvenience caused, confirming that no other products in their range are affected by this safety issue.
Nickel exposure can lead to a range of serious health concerns, according to official guidance.
The highly allergenic metal can cause severe skin irritation, accompanied by itching, redness and swelling. Affected individuals may also experience allergic reactions and respiratory problems.
These health risks are particularly concerning given the nature of body jewellery, which maintains prolonged contact with the skin.
The Mayo Clinic notes: “An allergic reaction (contact dermatitis) usually begins within hours to days after exposure to nickel.
“The reaction may last as long as two to four weeks. The reaction tends to occur only where your skin came into contact with nickel, but sometimes may appear in other places on your body.”
In severe cases, extended exposure may lead to perforation of the nasal septum.
Acute ingestion of nickel compounds presents additional health risks, with symptoms including nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
