Robert Reyes Challenges Conventional Neural Theory of Vision With a Holographic Framework at MIBF 2026

Independent researcher and author Robert Reyes will have his book, The Human Holographic Visual System, showcased at the 2026 Manila International Book Fair, bringing a provocative question to readers: does the prevailing neural theory fully explain how visual images are produced in the brain?

Reyes recently submitted an article to Skeptical Inquirer Magazine and is developing a longer work-in-progress article for Frontier Magazine. His central message is that the current neural theory of the visual system rests on assumptions he believes should be reexamined, and that a holographic visual system offers a better theoretical framework.

In his feature article, Reyes describes the conventional model as one in which light reaches photoreceptors in the retina, is converted through phototransduction into electrical impulses or neural signals, and is transmitted to the brain. He challenges the assumption that those impulses are themselves the visual information later rebuilt into mental images, arguing that their function may instead be supportive.

As an alternative, Reyes proposes that action potentials and electrical impulses help pulse-propagate light-wave interference patterns through the visual system. He argues that these patterns ultimately reach the primary visual cortex, where cortical structures assemble them into a nanoscale representation of the surrounding visual environment. His article examines the retinal nerve fiber layer, photoreceptors, opsin molecules, optic pathways, and cortical columns through this holographic lens.

At the heart of Reyes message is a call for the vision-science community to reconsider the theoretical framework itself. He does not present the holographic system as a complete explanation of perception; rather, he describes it as a proposed mechanism for bringing raw visual information into the brain, while acknowledging that how the brain interprets that information remains another part of the larger question.
