NWDC, NCCE Move to Strengthen Teacher Education in Northwest

The Northwest Development Commission (NWDC) and the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) have agreed to a strategic partnership to strengthen teacher training and reposition Colleges of Education as drivers of regional development under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Speaking at a high-level meeting with NCCE’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Angela Ajala, NWDC Managing Director/CEO Professor Shehu Abdullahi Ma’aji underscored the importance of investing in teachers.
“The Northwest cannot achieve sustainable development without investing in teachers. Colleges of Education are the foundation. As NWDC, we are committed to working with NCCE to improve training, infrastructure, and the perception of the teaching profession across our seven states,” he said.
Dr. Ajala emphasised the need to restore respect for teachers. “You cannot go through life without passing through a teacher, and yet it is the teacher that is at the bottom of the ladder. The respect for teachers has been lost. We must change this narrative by strengthening Colleges of Education and making teaching a first-choice profession,” she stated.
Stakeholders at the meeting resolved to deepen collaboration on curriculum support, teacher training, and advocacy to improve the quality and appeal of teacher education in the Northwest. The NWDC reaffirmed that education will remain a priority pillar in its mandate to accelerate inclusive growth in the region.
Established to drive infrastructure and human capital development, the NWDC has identified education, skills, and youth and women development as central to its strategy for regional transformation.
