Meghan Markle issues statement on heartbreaking loss: ‘I have cried too many tears to count’
The Duchess of Sussex has announced the death of her beloved rescue beagle Guy, sharing an emotional tribute on Instagram Tuesday evening.
Meghan Markle, 43, wrote that she has “cried too many tears to count” following the loss of her cherished companion.
“The type of tears that make you get in the shower with the absurd hope that the running water on your face will somehow make you not feel them, or pretend they’re not there,” the duchess shared in her third Instagram post.
Guy had been by Meghan’s side since 2015, when she adopted him from a Canadian rescue organisation.
Meghan adopted her much moved companion from Montgomery County Animal Shelter, a kill shelter in Kentucky.
Volunteers transported him to A Dog’s Dream Rescue in Ontario, Canada, where he caught Meghan’s attention on Petfinder.
The rescue’s founder, Dolores Doherty, invited Meghan to an adoption event at a local pet store, where the then-Suits actress immediately connected with Guy.
“This dog has a charmed life,” Doherty recalled thinking after seeing photos of Meghan with the beagle, noting his “magnificent ears and eyes.”
“She could’ve bought a dog, but she chose to adopt,” Doherty added.
Guy remained a constant presence through Meghan’s most significant life moments, from her acting career to her royal journey.
In 2017, as Prince Harry knelt to propose in the garden, Guy sat faithfully beside him. Harry later joked about his “downward dog” position during this moment in the couple’s 2022 documentary.
The beagle was even present on Meghan’s wedding day in May 2018, sitting at her feet while she had her hair and makeup done.

In 2017, Guy suffered a serious accident, breaking two legs and leaving Meghan “distraught” and “very upset.”
Under the care of veterinary surgeon Noel Fitzpatrick, Guy made a remarkable recovery despite initial fears he would never walk again.
Prince Harry and Meghan would drive late at night to visit Guy during his months of recovery in Surrey.
The beloved beagle made his final screen appearance in the trailer for Meghan’s upcoming lifestyle series, “With Love, Meghan,” lounging in his dog bed beside her.
