The odds of being struck by lightning are actually pretty slim – just less than one in a million. In other words, winning a jackpot such as the Powerball or Mega Millions is a far harder feat than being hit by an actual lightning, which for one man in New York was completely mind-blowing to find out – first hand.
Man Gets Hit By Lightning – Gets Up and Buys Himself a Lottery Ticket
The man was struck by lightning and knocked off his feet, but was able to escape without any serious injuries, and even mustered the courage to buy a lottery ticket not long after the weird event.
Last Thursday, Thomas Fahmy was just walking to a dentist appointment in Staten Island when a lightning hit him in the foot with footage from a doorbell camera capturing the moment.
Commenting on events, Fahmy said: “I left the office a little bit early for that day to go to a dentist appointment, and I waited until the weather calmed down, no heavy rain. I said, ‘It’s my time to go,’ but that happened.”
He was knocked on the ground, but quickly recovered and was able to pick himself up. Recounting the story he would say that a lot of people were wondering if he had lost consciousness, for example, but he did not.
Mega Millions Ticket Doesn’t Pay
However, being struck by lightning is no mean feat, and Fahmy remembers the experience vividly. It is a cascade of feelings happening in the same instant – from tingling to numbness to pain – a sort of burning sensation as he describes it.
He was able to get help from a neighbor’s house and was subsequently taken to a hospital where doctors cleared him of any serious injuries such as burns or anything else. He was advised to simply keep drinking fluids but was kept for observation.
Of course, Fahmy took this as a sign and bought a Mega Millions lottery ticket, and it would have indeed been a very extraordinary story to tell only if his ticket didn’t win. Fahmy is now one of about 400 people to have been struck by lightning annually.
