The Indonesian Government has been urged to stop its case-by-case approach to poisoning incidents connected to the school meals program.
The MBG Watch Coalition said the government should declare an official food poisoning outbreak or a food safety emergency.
In January 2025, the government launched a Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program to improve nutrition and health for millions of people. However, the plan has been blighted by illness reports among schoolchildren.
According to the coalition, more than 43,000 children have been affected in 20 months, meaning it is no longer a series of local incidents but a national cross-sectorial food safety emergency.
