Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is likely across several parts of India over the next five days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning that a well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal will keep the southwest monsoon active over central India.
The weather system is also expected to help the monsoon advance into more parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab over the next four days.
The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Konkan and Goa, Gujarat Region (July 4-7), Madhya Maharashtra (including Pune, Nashik and adjoining districts) (July 4-6), Saurashtra and Kutch (July 4-5), Odisha (July 4-5) and West Madhya Pradesh (July 4).
Elsewhere, heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, North and South Interior Karnataka, Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu on different days during the forecast period.
According to the IMD, the low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal is expected to move west-northwestwards across north Odisha and north Chhattisgarh over the next three days.
The seasonal monsoon trough also remains active, supporting widespread rainfall across large parts of the country.
The weather office has warned that intense rainfall could lead to waterlogging, localised flooding, reduced visibility, traffic disruptions, landslides and damage to vulnerable structures and standing crops in affected regions.
Residents are advised to check traffic advisories before travelling and avoid areas prone to flooding and waterlogging.
The IMD has also issued advisories for farmers across several states, urging them to improve field drainage, postpone sowing or transplanting where heavy rain is forecast, and protect horticultural crops and livestock from adverse weather conditions.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into large parts of the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, including waters off the Gujarat, Konkan, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala coasts, as well as adjoining areas of the Bay of Bengal, until the weather improves.
