US President Donald Trump has announced that he will raise global tariffs from 10% to 15%, just a day after the Supreme Court struck down his sweeping tariff order.

The top court ruled late Friday evening that Trump had exceeded his authority by imposing broad global tariffs under a law meant strictly for national emergencies.

Last year, Trump introduced sweeping tariffs citing the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) of 1977, which allows the US President to regulate trade during a declared national emergency. However, the Supreme Court held that the use of the law in this context went beyond the powers granted to the executive.

Within hours of the ruling, Trump issued a fresh proclamation imposing a 10% global tariff on nearly all imports into the United States. This time, he invoked Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, a rarely used provision.

“Section 122 authorizes the President to impose, for a period not exceeding 150 days unless extended by an Act of the Congress, a temporary import surcharge up to 15 percent ad valorem and other temporary limitations on articles imported into the United States in situations of fundamental international payments problems”, as said in the official statement of the White House on usage of Section 122 of the Trade Act 1974.
