China’s military is laying the groundwork to send humanoid robots into battle. A review of over 100 military procurement documents, academic papers, and related materials from 2025 and 2026 reveals that the People’s Liberation Army is not just thinking about robotic warfare in the abstract. It is actively commissioning training systems, modeling urban combat scenarios, and tapping into a domestic robotics industry that already dominates global production.

From procurement docs to urban assault models

The clearest signal came in May 2025, when the PLA issued a formal tender seeking humanoid robots specifically for training purposes. A few months later, in August 2025, researchers at the National University of Defense Technology published a paper that modeled how combat robots, including humanoid systems and unmanned ground vehicles, could be integrated into urban assault teams operating alongside human soldiers. The paper treated these machines not as logistical helpers carrying supplies behind the front line, but as primary participants in close-quarters combat operations.

By June 2026, the military had allocated roughly $300,000 for developing data collection systems related to humanoid robotics.

The industrial base is already there

Chinese companies accounted for approximately 95% of global humanoid robot shipments in 2025. This industrial dominance gives the PLA a deep bench of commercial partners already manufacturing sophisticated humanoid systems at scale.

Norinco, China’s state-owned defense conglomerate, demonstrated exactly this kind of crossover in August 2026 with the introduction of its Fuxi humanoid robot. The system was designed for reconnaissance and remote operation duties.

The World Humanoid Robot Games, held in Beijing in August 2026, offered a public showcase of how rapidly these systems are advancing. Demonstrations highlighted improvements in mobility and task performance. Robots navigated complex environments, manipulated objects, and performed coordinated movements.

The gap between ambition and deployment

No armed humanoid robots are currently deployed in live PLA units. Energy consumption is a primary constraint. Humanoid robots burn through battery power at rates that make sustained field operations impractical with current technology. Reliability in dynamic environments is another persistent problem, as urban combat zones offer rubble, dust, unpredictable terrain, electromagnetic interference, and adversaries actively trying to disable systems.

What this means for the global military balance

The US military is pursuing its own robotic warfare programs, but it does not enjoy the same kind of integrated civilian-military industrial base for humanoid systems that China has built. When 95% of global humanoid shipments come from Chinese factories, the supply chain advantages for Beijing’s defense planners are obvious.

The NUDT paper’s focus on urban assault scenarios is telling. Taiwan’s cities would be the most likely theater for any PLA ground combat operation in the foreseeable future.
